BRINGING IRISH CULTURE AND HISTORY TO MILWAUKEE AND WISCONSIN FOR 6 DECADES

History of the Scholarships

In the early 1970’s, the Shamrock Club began fundraising for scholarship funds. This included an Irish film series at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee Union’s Cinema. The funds went to the Shamrock Club Scholarship Fund at the UW Milwaukee Foundation. Individuals in Irish or Irish-related fields of studies were given the scholarship to study in Ireland. Most of the Scholarship Winners came back to the Shamrock Club.

Shamrock Club and UWM Foundation Split

Scholarship funds were initially $500, but were increased to $1000 in the middle of the 1980s. Unfortunately, the funds were blended into the general UWM Foundation funds, and the scholarship money ran out in 1996.

Shcolarship Rebuilt

In 2003, the Scholarship Fund was resurrected by the Shamrock Club, this time manged by the Club itself. The scholarship was set at $500, but the parameters were changed to allow up to five winners per year.

The Shamrock Club also administered the Milwaukee Chapter of the Ancient Order of Hibernians scholarship for a number of years.

In 2022, the scholarship was renamed in honor of two of the people who headed up the committee over the years: John Gleeson, a Dublin native, and James Liddy, a poet originally from Wexford. Both taught at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the English, History and Celtic Studies departments.

36th Annual Mass in Honor of St Patrick

The 36th Annual Special Mass To Honor St. Patrick takes place on Saturday, March 11, 2023, at St. Patrick’s Church, 723 West Washington Street, Milwaukee, at 8.30 am.   The Shamrock Club Choir sings the liturgy. The Milwaukee Fire and Police Band will pipe for the Mass. There will be a sign reader for hearing impaired. There are readings and songs in Irish and English.  If your Irish group is interested in being a part of the Mass, please contact us. St Patrick’s is a beautiful church, decorated in Celtic knots and crosses. Many members of the Shamrock Club donated hours on its remodeling and restoration, and the Shamrock Club donated over $30,000 towards the work.  The Mass combines Irish and English hymns, pageantry, from the many Irish cultural and religious societies, and is a wonderful way to start a day of celebrating St Patrick.

55th St. Patrick’s Parade, Noon Downtown Milwaukee

The 55th Annual Shamrock Club of Wisconsin St. Patrick’s Day Parade will take place on March 11, 2023.   Stepping off on Wisconsin Avenue at MLK Drive, the parade will feature 100+ units including Irish dance groups, pipe & drum corps, local celebrities, and dignitaries.

Building on a successful partnership, the Shamrock Club of Wisconsin and the Westtown Association along with presenting sponsor, Miller Lite,   continue to collaborate on Wisconsin’s oldest and largest St.  Patrick’s  Day celebration. Although the Shamrock Club of Wisconsin is  celebrating  its 54th anniversary of producing the parade, the event  dates back to  1843,  predating the incorporation of the State of Wisconsin and the City  of  Milwaukee. Milwaukee’s parade is the 6th oldest in the nation.

Milwaukee  celebrated its first St. Patrick’s Day Parade on March 17,  1843. One  of the earliest in the United States, the parade predates  Wisconsin’s  statehood and Milwaukee’s incorporation as a city!

It was the first St. Patrick’s Day Parade held outside of the 13 original colonies

The  parade was originally inspired and influenced by two Irish  movements  of the time: the Repeal Movement and the Temperance Movement

The  modern version of the parade began in 1967 with the Inaugural  Shamrock  Club of Wisconsin’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Wisconsin  Avenue.
